Electrical panel wirer
Location: Swavesey, Cambridgeshire Job type: Permanent, full time Salary: £32,000 – £38,000 per annum, dependent on experience Hours: Monday to Friday, basic daytime hours
The role
We are recruiting an Electrical Panel Wirer on behalf of a well-established and respected engineering business based in Swavesey, Cambridgeshire. This is a stable, long-standing business with a strong international reputation and a close-knit engineering team.
This is a workshop-based, hands-on role where you will build and wire industrial electrical control panels, prepare cable assemblies, and install electrical equipment on a diverse range of specialist machinery. Unlike repetitive production-line wiring, this role offers genuine variety — making it an excellent long-term opportunity for someone who takes real pride in producing neat, accurate work and is looking to settle into a role where their contribution is visible and valued. We are looking for someone settled in their career who sees this as a long-term position, not a stepping stone.
Main responsibilities
- Build and wire industrial electrical control panels to approved drawings and wiring diagrams
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, component layouts, and termination information
- Prepare, cut, strip, crimp, label, and terminate cables and machine wiring looms
- Fit and connect cable glands, terminal blocks, connectors, sensors, switches, motors, and other machine electrical devices
- Route, secure, and identify wiring neatly within panels and across machinery
- Check completed work against drawings, identify discrepancies, and help resolve wiring issues
- Work alongside mechanical and engineering colleagues during machine assembly, testing, and preparation for despatch
- Follow safe working practices and maintain a clean, organised workshop at all times
Skills/experience
Essential:
- Practical experience in electrical panel wiring, machine wiring, or a similar electrical assembly role
- Ability to read and work accurately from electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Competence with hand tools, crimping equipment, cable preparation, and termination
- A methodical, neat approach to wiring — someone who takes care and pride in the quality of their work
- Excellent attention to detail and a proactive, reliable approach
- Comfortable working independently within a small, close-knit team
- A settled career background — we are looking for someone seeking a long-term role
Desirable:
- Experience with industrial control systems, 24V DC and 230/400V AC wiring, motors, sensors, and solenoid valves
- Electrical fault-finding or machine commissioning experience
- 18th edition wiring regulations — useful but not essential; practical ability is what counts
- Relevant electrical qualifications are welcome, though proven practical experience is equally valued
Salary & working hours
- Salary: £32,000 – £38,000 per annum, dependent on experience
- Hours: Monday to Friday, basic daytime hours
- Workshop based — no expectation to travel off-site, though occasional local travel may arise
