The Opportunity
FHP’s Retail Agency team has grown significantly over the last five years and continues to build on its position as one of the leading independent Retail & Leisure teams in the Midlands.
As the team continues to win new instructions and take on an increasing volume of work, FHP is looking to appoint a Retail Agency Surveyor to join the business in either Nottingham or Birmingham.
This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded surveyor who wants to build a career in Retail Agency and play an active role in the continued growth of the team.
You will work closely with the Head of Retail and experienced members of the wider Retail & Leisure team, gaining exposure to live instructions across high streets, shopping centres and retail parks.
The role offers the opportunity to move beyond simply supporting transactions. As your experience develops, you will be encouraged to take ownership of instructions, develop client relationships, identify new opportunities and play a role in winning new business.
The Role
The successful candidate will work across a varied portfolio of retail instructions throughout the Midlands, supporting the team on both existing and newly won mandates.
Responsibilities will include:
- Taking responsibility for live high street, shopping centre and retail instructions as experience develops
- Supporting senior colleagues on instructions and stepping in to pick up and drive transactions through to completion when required
- Working across shopping centres, high street and retail park property
- Preparing marketing reports and strategies
- Working with landlords and occupiers to put deals together
- Supporting leasing activity and due diligence on shopping centre and high street instructions
- Undertaking market research, inspections and comparable analysis
- Identifying prospective occupiers and proactively approaching the market
- Assisting with negotiations and progressing transactions through to completion
- Developing strong relationships with existing clients and identifying opportunities to win further instructions
- Supporting business development and contributing to the continued growth of FHP’s Retail & Leisure offering
- Building knowledge and relationships across the Midlands and wider central belt
- Working closely with the Head of Retail and wider agency team
There is significant scope for the successful candidate to develop their own specialism and take increasing responsibility for instructions and client relationships.
About You
We are looking for a commercially minded, ambitious and entrepreneurial surveyor with a minimum of 2 years’ commercial property agency experience.
A retail agency background would be advantageous, particularly experience across high street and/or shopping centres, but it is not essential.
FHP is also open to strong candidates from office, industrial or general commercial agency who have a genuine interest in moving into Retail & Leisure.
You will ideally have:
- A minimum of 2 years’ commercial property agency experience
- A track record of getting deals done and progressing transactions
- Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of agency fundamentals
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- A genuine passion for Retail & Leisure
- A proactive approach to business development and winning new work
- The confidence to build relationships with landlords, occupiers and other property professionals
- Strong knowledge of, or an interest in, the Midlands property market
- The ability to work independently while contributing to a wider team
- MRICS qualification or be working towards the APC is desirable, but not essential
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who genuinely lives and breathes the retail market and sees Retail Agency as a long-term career rather than simply another sector to work in.
You should be commercially curious and capable of thinking laterally about opportunities. Whether that means identifying a different type of occupier for a vacant unit, considering how space could be reconfigured or finding a new route to market, FHP is looking for someone who brings ideas rather than simply manages instructions.
The FHP Retail Team
FHP’s Retail business has experienced significant growth in recent years, with both turnover and headcount increasing substantially.
The team currently works across a significant volume of live retail instructions, with shopping centre instructions and the wider portfolio continuing to grow.
FHP now has hundreds of live retail and leisure instructions across its offices, providing the successful candidate with immediate exposure to a substantial amount of market activity.
The business has also expanded from its traditional East Midlands base into a strong central belt footprint, creating opportunities to work on instructions and develop relationships across a wider geographical market.
The team has a strong track record of developing people internally and allowing individuals to shape their own careers and specialisms.
There is a clear progression path from Surveyor through to senior and Director level, without a rigid corporate structure dictating how quickly someone can progress.
Why FHP?
This is an opportunity to join a business with an established reputation in the Midlands while having a genuine influence on the next stage of its Retail & Leisure growth.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Work closely with the Head of Retail and senior members of the team
- Take ownership of live instructions as your experience develops
- Work across high street, shopping centre and retail park property
- Work with established landlords, investors, developers and occupiers
- Build your own network and profile within the Midlands market
- Play a genuine role in winning new instructions
- Develop specialist Retail & Leisure expertise
- Shape your own area of specialism and career path
- Progress quickly within a growing and entrepreneurial business
- Work within a team that has continued to increase its market share and instruction base
FHP’s approach is deliberately entrepreneurial. People are encouraged to develop relationships, identify opportunities and contribute to the growth of the business rather than simply operate within a defined corporate role.
Location
The position can be based from either the Nottingham or Birmingham office.
The successful candidate will be expected to have a strong presence within the office and will regularly travel across the Midlands for client meetings, inspections and viewings.
The location will ultimately depend on the candidate’s experience, network and where they can make the greatest contribution to the wider Retail & Leisure team.
