Principal Engineer – Highway Design

Overview

In this role you will lead the development, design and delivery of a broad range of highway projects for the city’s network. You will provide technical leadership, project management and ensure designs meet standards, budgets and programmed milestones. You’ll review external design work and guide teams to consistently high quality outcomes. The role offers a meaningful opportunity to improve local transport and public services in a collaborative council environment. You will work with cross-functional teams to deliver tangible infrastructure improvements.

Responsibilities

• Lead development, design and delivery of highway projects and interventions
• Provide technical expertise, leadership and project management to designs
• Ensure designs comply with recognised standards and best practice
• Manage budget and time constraints and monitor progress
• Review external design work commissioned by the Council for technical quality
• Coordinate with stakeholders to align with strategic programming requirements

Key requirements

• Civil Engineering degree or equivalent qualification
• Experience leading delivery of highway design services/projects
• Strong communication, problem‑solving and IT skills
