Overview

As a placement student, you join Rolls-Royce Motor Cars at Goodwood to gain hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering. You’ll work within the Interior Surface Centre to support quality and production control on bespoke components for vehicles. You will analyze production data, apply structured problem-solving methods, and contribute to continuous improvement of processes. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams and metrology specialists to ensure high-quality parts, while developing practical, market-ready solutions. This role offers real responsibility from day one and a clear path to impact within a world-class automotive environment.

Responsibilities

• Analyse real production and quality data to identify issues and improvement opportunities
• Support day-to-day production ensuring quality and processes deliver components for Rolls-Royce vehicles
• Apply structured problem-solving methods (8D, 5-Why, Ishikawa) to resolve challenges
• Contribute to continuous improvement to optimise manufacturing processes and reduce waste
• Support development of quality standards, inspection methods, and process controls
• Work with metrology specialists using advanced measurement technologies (CMM, laser measurement, 3D scanning)
• Prepare and present findings and improvement ideas to different teams across the business

Key requirements

• studying towards a BEng/MEng in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related discipline (2:1 or above)
• interest in manufacturing processes, production systems, and continuous improvement
• strong analytical skills and confidence with data (Excel, VBA, Power BI)
• interest in understanding how products are made, controlled, and improved in a production environment
• ability to work with different teams and communicate technical topics clearly
