Overview

As Union Director at Birkbeck Students’ Union, you will lead the organisation’s strategic direction and day-to-day operations, working with elected Officers and the Board to deliver priorities that benefit students. You will own planning, finance, governance, risk, compliance and people management to ensure sustainability and impact. Your role includes developing Officers, strengthening partnerships, and exploring opportunities for fundraising and development. This is a hands-on leadership position in a small organisation with a clear focus on student voice and democratic processes.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for BBKSU in collaboration with elected Officers and the Board of Trustees
• Oversee organisational planning, financial management, governance, risk, compliance and people management
• Support and develop elected Officers and student representatives to fulfil their democratic mandates
• Build strong relationships with senior colleagues at Birkbeck and external partners
• Identify opportunities for partnership, fundraising and organisational development
• Balance strategic thinking with practical problem-solving in a small organisation

Key requirements

• Experience leading teams and delivering organisational strategy
• Strong financial, governance, risk and compliance experience
• Ability to work effectively with Boards and senior stakeholders
• Understanding of democratic, student-led organisations and ability to empower elected representatives
