Overview

As a Senior Principal Hydraulic Engineer at Stantec, you provide strategic technical leadership across hydraulic disciplines for major UK AMP8 programmes and beyond. You set governance, engineering standards, and technical direction, while assuring quality for nationally significant water and wastewater projects. You mentor senior engineers and help grow the Hydraulic Engineering capability, strengthening client partnerships and shaping the discipline’s future. You’ll work with cross‑functional teams to improve network resilience and long‑term infrastructure performance.

Responsibilities

• Act as senior technical authority for complex hydraulic engineering and transient analysis across multiple frameworks
• Set technical direction, governance and engineering standards for hydraulic projects
• Provide technical assurance for nationally significant water and wastewater programmes
• Build strategic client relationships and act as trusted advisor on complex challenges
• Lead multidisciplinary technical reviews and support innovation in hydraulic engineering methodologies and digital delivery
• Mentor senior engineers and support succession planning
• Support business growth through framework leadership, strategic bids and expansion of hydraulic capability
• Shape the technical standards and governance of hydraulic engineering across projects

Key requirements

• Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Civil, Mechanical, Hydraulic Engineering or related discipline
• Chartered Engineer (CEng)
• Extensive experience delivering complex hydraulic engineering projects in the UK water sector
• Expertise in fluid mechanics, hydraulic structures, pumping systems and transient analysis
• Significant experience with hydraulic modelling software such as HADES, VARISM, Flow-3D or equivalent
• Proven strategic technical leadership across multidisciplinary programmes
• Experience establishing governance, standards and QA processes
• Excellent client relationship, stakeholder management and communication skills
• Experience mentoring and developing senior technical professionals
