Health & Safety Manager – Construction / Civil Engineering
Location: Wembley, London (with travel across London & Home Counties)
Salary: £60,000-£70,000 + Car / Car Allowance
Contract: Permanent, Full-time
The Opportunity
An established construction and civil engineering contractor is looking to appoint an experienced Health & Safety Manager to support projects across London and the Home Counties.
This is a hands-on position requiring strong experience within groundworks, reinforced concrete (RC) frames and civil engineering. You will work closely with site and project management teams, carrying out inspections, providing practical advice and driving consistently high safety standards across live construction environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake independent site safety inspections, audits and behavioural observations.
- Provide practical H&S advice and support to Project Managers, Contracts Managers, Site Managers and Supervisors.
- Monitor high-risk activities including excavations, temporary works, lifting operations, buried services, plant operations, drainage, RC frame construction and demolition interfaces.
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and appropriate corrective actions.
- Challenge unsafe practices constructively while building positive relationships with operational teams.
- Monitor compliance with CDM 2015, the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and wider construction legislation.
- Produce clear inspection, audit and investigation reports and support continuous improvement across projects.
About You
- Significant experience as a Health & Safety Manager or Senior H&S Advisor within groundworks, RC frames or civil engineering.
- Previous experience working for a groundworks or civil engineering contractor is essential.
- Strong understanding of the hazards and controls associated with complex construction activities.
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate or equivalent as a minimum.
- Strong communication, influencing and report-writing skills.
- A practical, solutions-focused approach to health and safety.
- Full UK driving licence with flexibility to travel across London and the Home Counties.
Desirable
- NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Practice or equivalent.
- CertIOSH or CMIOSH membership.
- Temporary Works knowledge, including an understanding of BS 5975.
