Introduction
The apprenticeship in dental nursing is a 12‑month government‑funded course by City & Guilds, a Level 3 Extended Diploma. During the course you will assist dentists, sterilise and prepare equipment, perform reception duties and support the overall patient experience.

What You’ll Do
Provide efficient and reliable chair‑side support to the dental surgery. Day‑to‑day duties may include:
- Reception: answering phones and greeting patients
- Managing patient queries and bookings, including follow‑ups
- Dealing with payments
- Sterilising and preparing equipment for dentists
- Recording and managing patient records
- Supporting patients’ wellbeing and overall dental experience
- Cleaning dental areas, including chairs
- Managing stock of equipment and supplies
- Other duties to support dentists and senior team to provide effective patient care
Training Outcome
With an apprenticeship you may see earnings increase over time. After completion you could progress into roles such as team manager, team leader or dental practice manager. Further training could lead to becoming a dental therapist, hygienist or orthodontic therapist, helping to carry out routine dentistry work or improve patients’ oral health and appearance.
