About us

In Camden we’re building somewhere everyone can thrive, by making our borough the best place to live, work, study and visit. We’re home to a fast‑growing economy and we’re making radical social change a reality, so that nobody gets left behind. The food industry is thriving in Camden, and the Food Safety team plays a critical role in ensuring that food produced and sold in Camden is safe and healthy to eat. By working in partnership with the business community, we’re driving regulatory compliance, protecting consumers and stimulating successful business growth for the benefit of all.

The role

Operating within a fast paced, flexible and dynamic team, you will lead a team of authorised food safety officers to deliver Camden’s statutory food safety and infectious disease functions and protect citizens from harm caused by unsafe food. You will also support the development and delivery of a wide range of partnership projects across the team.

Key responsibilities include data analysis, report writing, briefing documents, performance management processes, responding to informal and formal enquiries, member enquiries and Freedom of Information requests. You will manage staff, oversee HR processes, allocate work, provide support, advice and training to officers, and ensure all service decisions comply with relevant legislation, policies and guidance.

You will play a lead role in developing and maintaining the service’s case management systems, ensuring all work can be logged, stored and reported legally and accurately. The role is based in an enabled, empowered and team‑focused service where all officers work flexibly to meet evolving service demands. You will also deputise and cover for team leaders and managers as appropriate.

About You

  • Hold a BSc/MSc (or its antecedents or equivalency certificate) in Environmental Health and be registered by the Environmental Health Registration Board or the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health to practice as an Environmental Health Officer/Practitioner.
  • Alternatively, hold a Higher Certificate in Food Control awarded by the Environmental Health Registration Board or the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, or another suitable qualification defined in the Food Law Code of Practice for an Authorised Officer, and ideally hold a suitable qualification in health and safety enforcement such as a Diploma/Higher Certificate in Health and Safety Enforcement. Qualifications such as IOSH/NEBOSH Diploma may also be considered.
  • Meet the authorisation and competency requirements for an Authorised officer set out by the Food Standards Agency Food Law Code of Practice, and be able to lead a team of authorised professionals.
  • Ideally meet the competency requirements for a Lead Food Officer.
  • Have an excellent knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislative framework and experience in its application. You will handle a wide range of casework including difficult and complex cases and deliver innovative interventions.
  • Have experience or capability working with a team of professional officers, supporting their development and managing performance to deliver service objectives.
