About the Role
Our client, a premier recruitment consultancy, is searching for a Principal Software Engineer specializing in backend systems to join a rapidly expanding technology firm. This role offers a hybrid working model, enabling collaboration in the office and flexibility from home, located in East London, Eastern Cape . You will be a key technical leader, responsible for architecting, developing, and maintaining scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs that power complex enterprise applications. The ideal candidate is a seasoned engineer with a deep understanding of distributed systems, database design, and modern software development practices. You will mentor junior engineers, drive technical decision-making, and ensure the delivery of robust, mission-critical software solutions. Key Responsibilities
- Architect, design, and implement scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend services and APIs.
- Lead the development of complex software systems, ensuring high code quality and performance.
- Mentor and guide junior and mid-level software engineers, fostering technical growth within the team.
- Collaborate with product managers, architects, and other engineering teams to define system requirements and technical solutions.
- Drive technical decision-making, evaluate new technologies, and establish best practices.

- Develop and maintain robust database schemas and data models.
- Ensure the security and integrity of backend systems and data.

Requirements
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
- Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in software engineering, with a significant focus on backend development.
- Proven experience in architecting and building large-scale, distributed systems.
- Expertise in one or more backend programming languages such as Java, Python, Go, or C#.
- Deep understanding of database technologies, including relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (e.g., Cassandra, MongoDB) databases.
- Experience with microservices architectures, RESTful APIs, and message queuing systems (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Strong understanding of software development principles, design patterns, and testing methodologies.
