Senior / Principal Traffic Engineer

Overview

In this Senior/Principal Engineer role, you’ll lead traffic engineering projects within WSP’s Local Government Highways and Bridges team in Exeter, guiding project delivery and mentoring junior staff. You’ll serve as a technical design lead and project manager, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and clients to deliver safe, sustainable local transport solutions. The position blends client-facing delivery with people leadership, offering growth through varied, impactful projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead on Traffic Engineering projects from TRO production to signage placement
• Act as Technical Design Lead and Project Manager for local transport projects
• Line management and mentorship for junior staff in Communities Highways
• Prepare and review reports, drawings, schedules per local procedures
• Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams across the UK and with clients/stakeholders
• Deliver projects with on-time, on-budget, consistent outcomes
• Construction supervision for schemes

Key requirements

• Passion for making a real difference in local communities
• Experience in highway, traffic and civil engineering with focus on sustainable/active travel
• Proven ability to manage projects and individuals with minimal supervision
• Strong written and spoken communication; effective stakeholder liaison
• Knowledge of UK TSRDG 2016 and Traffic Act governance/approval procedures
• Chartered or Incorporated status preferred, or progress toward professional qualification
• GIS mapping software experience is advantageous
