Principal System Safety Engineer

Overview

In this role you will contribute to the Systems Engineering and Safety Assurance of rail projects in the UK, developing safety plans, managing hazard records, and supporting client and regulator interactions. You will work within the Transportation Engineering team to ensure safety and interoperability across systems, while shaping safety cases and project authorisation strategies. You’ll collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver compliant, safe, and reliable rail solutions. This is a chance to impact rail safety and performance at scale.

Responsibilities

• Develop System Engineering and Assurance plans and processes
• Support safety and assurance management for projects (e.g. CSM-REA, EN50126)
• Develop and manage System Safety Plan, System Definition, and Hazard Records; coordinate with project teams
• Stakeholder management with clients, authorisation bodies and independent assessments
• Prepare and develop safety requirements/specifications
• Support Engineering Safety Case / Safety Justification development
• Develop Project Authorisation Strategies and support Rail Interoperability Regulations
• Develop scope of works and work packages with clients
• Participate in multidisciplinary review of project deliverables
• Assist in aligning engineering budget and schedule with project requirements

Key requirements

• Engineering degree or equivalent
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Railway systems and assurance experience incl. system safety and interoperability
• Knowledge of UK Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations
