Backend Software Engineer – Distributed Systems

Overview

As a Backend Software Engineer, you will help build and scale the core messaging platform that powers real-time interactions for developers and businesses worldwide. You’ll work on highly scalable distributed systems, optimizing performance and reliability while shaping architecture and code quality. The role sits in an AI-first engineering environment, leveraging modern AI tools to accelerate development. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams, contribute to low-latency messaging, Pub/Sub services, and state synchronization, and have ownership of technical decisions.

Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable distributed system capabilities for the core messaging platform
• Improve performance, reliability, and fault tolerance in production-grade software
• Work on low-latency messaging, Pub/Sub services, and state synchronization
• Contribute to AI-enabled development workflows while maintaining architectural ownership
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and operate autonomously in a fast-paced environment

Key requirements

• Backend development experience with Go, Node.js or similar server-side language
• Experience building or operating distributed systems, messaging platforms, or streaming technologies
• Understanding of scalability, concurrency, performance optimisation, and fault-tolerant design
• Ability to deliver production-ready software and work autonomously
• Interest in leveraging AI development tools while maintaining engineering quality
• Experience with Pub/Sub platforms, Kafka, RabbitMQ, NATS, streaming systems or cloud infrastructure (advantageous)
