Engineer / Senior Engineer (Drainage)

Overview

As a Senior/Principal Engineer in SYSTRA’s drainage team, you will lead civil drainage design for highway and development projects, from feasibility to detailed design, ensuring technical excellence and regulatory compliance. You’ll manage budgets, resources and client relationships while mentoring junior staff and coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams. This role combines technical delivery with leadership to grow the team and project portfolio. You will work with public and private sector clients to deliver safe, sustainable drainage solutions at scale.

Responsibilities

• Lead financial, technical and project management control across drainage schemes
• Delegate, manage and guide Engineers and Technicians on projects
• Develop and mentor junior Engineers within the team
• Deliver drainage designs for adoptable/non-adoptable schemes to relevant standards (Sewers for Adoption/Scotland, Local Design Guides, DMRB)
• Produce and deliver technical packages and applications
• Direct Micro-drainage/Info Drainage, Auto-CAD modelling and drawings
• Coordinate designs with project teams and other disciplines
• Prepare and price scoping documents, proposals and deliverables for new projects
• Show leadership, drive business development and maintain client relationships
• Ensure on-time, within-budget project delivery meeting quality and contractual requirements
• Engage with clients to understand objectives and manage expectations
• Conduct site visits and report progress to stakeholders

Key requirements

• Civil Engineering experience in a consultancy
• Experience in surface/waste water drainage design and approvals
• Proficiency in drainage design on major/minor projects
• Knowledge of Sewers for Adoption/Scotland, DMRB, MfS, Local Authority guides
• Strong IT skills with Auto-CAD, Micro-drainage/Info-drainage, Civil3D
• Project management experience with financial/commercial responsibility
• Excellent communication and client-facing skills
• Experience in line management and technical oversight
• Ability to mentor and collaborate with diverse design teams
• Good technical reporting and fee proposal writing skills
