Principal Mechanical Engineer

Overview

In this role, you will lead mechanical design projects across the full lifecycle within a London-based built environment consultancy. You will coordinate multidisciplinary teams, ensure technical quality, and deliver compliant, sustainable solutions. Your work will influence project direction from concept through delivery, mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with clients and contractors. This is a people-focused, autonomous role that emphasizes impact, quality, and innovation in engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design projects from concept to delivery
• Manage scope, resources, programme and technical delivery
• Review calculations, designs and CAD models
• Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams and ensure technical quality
• Support R&D and introduce innovative, sustainable engineering solutions
• Mentor and develop junior engineers
• Collaborate with clients and contractors to deliver practical, compliant solutions
• Ensure designs meet UK regulations and industry standards

Key requirements

• Strong mechanical/building services design experience
• Experience within the built environment or consultancy sector
• Strong CAD and mechanical design capabilities
• Project management and team leadership experience
• A relevant Mechanical Engineering degree
• Chartered status or working towards chartership
• Strong knowledge of UK regulations and industry standards
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
