SVP, Head of Construction

Overview

In this role you lead Sompo UK’s Construction book, setting underwriting direction and driving profitable growth. You will own the portfolio’s P&L, manage governance and market engagement, and shape regional strategy with executive leadership. You collaborate across pricing, claims, product, and distribution to refine offerings and risk selection. This position offers strategic impact in a dynamic, expanding market and opportunities to influence the construction underwriting agenda.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a strategy for the Construction portfolio
• Oversee underwriting of complex and major construction risks in line with governance and global standards
• Own and manage the portfolio P&L with balanced risk diversification
• Lead regular reporting and portfolio reviews through data analysis
• Mentor and lead junior team members within the Energy and Construction leadership team
• Contribute to portfolio growth and profitability through strategy and appetite setting
• Manage stakeholder relationships with clients, brokers, and internal/external partners
• Collaborate on innovation, product development, and risk selection with pricing, claims, product, and distribution teams
• Monitor market trends to refine underwriting strategy and offerings
• Ensure compliant file management and regulatory standards
• Support marketing efforts and enhance Sompo’s market presence
• Lead annual business planning, budgeting, and performance forecasting for Construction

Key requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in insurance, engineering, finance, or related field
• 15+ years of underwriting experience with construction and engineering risk exposure
• At least 5 years in a leadership role
• Deep expertise in underwriting major infrastructure and complex construction projects globally
• Proven ability to manage P&L, drive portfolio performance, and lead strategic initiatives
• Exceptional negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills
• Experience building and leading multicultural teams in matrix or regional settings
