Senior Substation Electrical Designer

Overview

As a Senior Substation Electrical Designer, you will lead detailed electrical and physical design for HV substations across 5 kV to 500 kV. You will work within the Western Canada Power Delivery team to deliver complete design packages, coordinate across disciplines, and support project execution from estimating to commissioning. Your impact includes shaping safe, reliable substation layouts and integrating vendor specifications into deliverables. Responsibilities

• Develop detailed substation physical and electrical design drawings and packages
• Prepare electrical design deliverables (one-lines, layouts, grounding, conduit, control house, lighting, BOMs)
• Design cable systems and station services
• Perform QA/QC reviews of design packages
• Incorporate vendor drawings and specifications into designs
• Support project execution with progress updates and cross-discipline coordination
• Assist with cost estimating, proposals, and LOE development
• Participate in site visits to gather field data and validate designs
• Support construction, commissioning, and field activities as required
• Mentor and train junior staff
• Coordinate with civil, structural, and P&C engineers and designers

Key requirements

• Demonstrable experience in 138kV (and above) systems
• Ability to identify relevant electrical code rules and industry standards for power system and station service design
• Ability to visualize and evaluate clearances and equipment layouts
• Strong knowledge of substation layout and physical design
• Understanding of grounding, lightning protection, and applicable codes
• Strong safety mindset
• ~8+ years of HV substation design
• Experience developing complete drawing and construction packages
• Experience with AutoCAD/MicroStation
• Experience with site visits and field data collection
