VP, Engineering

Overview

Envision and own the engineering function at NewStore, guiding technical direction, architecture, and organizational culture. Lead the engineering leadership team and partner with the CEO/COO to align engineering with business growth and market needs. Drive a modular, AI-enabled platform that retailers and partners can build on, shaping the future of agentic commerce. Represent engineering externally and build a credible, high-performance engineering brand. This is a rare opportunity to impact scale, strategy, and product across a global platform.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the engineering vision and architecture strategy
• Evolve the platform to a modular, AI-ready architecture with clean API surfaces
• Foster an AI-first engineering culture and automate delivery processes
• Lead and develop Directors, senior managers, and functional leads across platform and product engineering
• Shape organizational structure, performance management, and headcount planning
• Drive hiring, retention, and professional development within engineering
• Manage internal communication about what is being built and shipped
• Represent NewStore engineering externally through speaking engagements and thought leadership
• Collaborate with Product, Sales, Customer Success, and CISO to align with business priorities and security standards
• Partner with CEO/COO on strategy, operating rhythm, and cross-functional alignment

Key requirements

• Proven track record as a senior engineering leader with experience scaling organizations across multiple teams and locations
• Ability to lead a disciplined engineering culture and make decisive organizational decisions
• Strong architectural judgment and the ability to discuss tradeoffs with technical teams
• Comfort as the most senior technical voice in boardroom, with customers, and with executives
• Experience in startup or scale-up environments and delivering fast, high-quality software
• Hands-on experience with AI-driven development and AI-assisted tooling
• External relationship management with customers/partners at C-level level
• Public-facing experience (optional but beneficial) with ability to translate strategy to non-technical audiences
• Experience with AWS or comparable cloud infrastructure at scale
• Familiarity with retail technology or commerce platforms preferred
