Technical Director of Highways

Overview

In this role you will shape the strategic direction of the highways discipline and lead multiple cross‑functional teams to deliver complex, high‑value infrastructure projects. You will build senior client relationships, drive bidding and growth initiatives, and ensure technical excellence across delivery and governance. The role combines leadership with hands‑on oversight of design, reviews, and project outcomes in a live construction environment. You’ll influence major programmes regionally and nationally, contributing to the firm’s growth and reputation in highways and asset management.

Responsibilities

• Lead multiple technical teams and senior managers delivering highways, asset management, and construction design services
• Shape and influence the strategic direction of the highways discipline with senior leadership
• Win new business and grow major client accounts at regional and national levels
• Oversee bid strategy and work with multidisciplinary teams to produce competitive, high‑quality submissions
• Build and maintain senior client relationships and influence decisions at the highest level
• Drive financial performance including revenue growth, margin improvement, WIP control, and account success
• Recruit, develop, and inspire high‑performing engineering and technical teams
• Champion technical excellence, governance, and best practice across complex infrastructure programmes
• Represent highways engineering expertise to clients, stakeholders, and industry partners
• Collaborate with major infrastructure clients, local authorities, and private sector developers
• Influence delivery of projects on and off site, including live construction environments

Key requirements

• A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
• Significant experience in senior technical leadership roles within highways or civil engineering
• Strong track record delivering complex, multidisciplinary infrastructure projects
• Experience working with local authorities, developers, and/or major infrastructure clients
• Ability to oversee technical design, review, and assurance of engineering outputs
• Experience working within construction environments and live project delivery
• Strong understanding of design standards, codes, and CDM regulations
