Strategic Environmental Assessment – Principal / Associate / Associate Director

Overview

In this role you will lead and coordinate environmental and sustainability assessment projects within the Infrastructure Planning and Environmental Assessment team, guiding multi-disciplinary delivery and shaping client strategies. You’ll drive growth, develop innovative assessment tools, and embed sustainability into planning decisions. You will mentor colleagues, uphold health and safety, and collaborate across sectors to tackle long-term environmental challenges. This position offers impact at scale, shaping client offerings and advancing sustainable infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of environmental and sustainability assessment projects
• Drive sector business development and win new work
• Scope commissions, prepare proposals and secure assignments
• Manage multi-disciplinary project teams and subcontractors
• Deliver evidence-led outputs and high-quality reports
• Collaborate to design new assessment tools and promote digitisation/automation
• Promote inclusive team culture and mentor others
• Support health and safety and contribute to business strategy

Key requirements

• Experience delivering Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and/or Sustainability Appraisal (SA)
• Understanding of SEA regulatory requirements, case law, and Environmental Outcome Reporting (EOR) implications
• Experience with Integrated Impact Assessment (IIA), HRA, WFD, HIA, EqIA
• Familiarity with housing, water, waste/resources, energy sectors
• Relevant environmental or planning degree with chartered status or working towards chartership
• Knowledge of environmental/planning policy trends
• Strong written/verbal communication and quality assurance
• Proven people management and ability to develop teams
• Ability to win bids, bid strategy, and enhance reputation in assessment and appraisal
• GIS proficiency and understanding of automation opportunities in SEA/SA
• Client, regulator, and stakeholder engagement
• Proficiency in Word and Excel
