Overview
As Principal Electrical Engineer, you will lead the electrical design of hydropower and pumped storage projects, guiding multi-disciplinary teams from feasibility through commissioning. You’ll shape technical solutions for generators, control systems, protection, substations and transmission lines, ensuring feasibility and standards compliance. You’ll contribute to business growth, deliver key project outcomes, and mentor junior engineers. This role offers exposure to flagship projects like Coire Glas, Koysha and Dinorwig, and opportunities to work on grid upgrade initiatives.

Responsibilities
- Lead electrical engineering design for hydropower projects (generators, control/instrumentation, protection, substations, transmission lines)
- Perform design, modelling and analysis of electrical/electronic systems for feasibility and compliance
- Take line management responsibility for some team members and own project deliverables
- Support business growth and strategy development
- Collaborate with civil, mechanical and other disciplines for integrated designs
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
- Engage in design reviews with clients and design engineers; deliver presentations
- Contribute to grid upgrade projects including new transmission lines and substations
Key requirements
- Chartered status or Incorporated Engineer with IET, or working towards
- Experience with large rotating machines (generators or motors)
- Hydro and/or pumped storage experience highly desirable
- Electrical experience in other sectors advantageous
- Proficient in design drawings and documents (SLDs, line diagrams, calculations, load schedules, specs, reports)
- Familiar with collaborative reviews and design solutions
- Strong presentation and client-facing communication skills
- Active participation in collaborative design discussions and workshops
